4 Reasons Why You Need To Add Hibiscus To Your Skincare Regime

Sep 6, 2020 | Uncategorized

When we think of hibiscus we think of tropical destinations, salty hair and maybe a Pina-colada or two. But this tropical flower is much more then just something pretty to put behind your ear.

Hibiscus contain plant stem cells, these are capable of regenerating themselves when applied topically, meaning they help to stimulate the growth of more stem cells in the skin.

Hibiscus stem cells are known for their almost magical abilities to increase skin elasticity, natural collagen, moisture and fight every day free radicals. Still not convinced.

Here are four reasons why you need to add hibiscus into your skincare routine…. Yesterday!

1.Contains AHA’s which exfoliate the skin

Hibiscus naturally contains AHA’s, malic acid and citric acid. These gently exfoliate the skin, leaving it smooth and brightened. AHA’s help to clear away dead skin cells and assist with skin regeneration. The Malic acid and citric acid found in our Red ginseng and hibiscus mask, helps with reducing hyperpigmentation and increases skin clarity. Leaving you with clear, bright and younger looking skin, and I mean, who doesn’t want to wipe a few years off their face.

2. Helps retain your skins collagen and elastin

‘Covid-19’ aside the ‘it’ word of 2020 is definitely collagen! Everywhere you look products are being marketed to supposedly increase your collagen production therefore stop wrinkles and loss of elastin. These include coffee and smoothie additives, sheet face masks and even peanut butter. But increasing collagen synthesis is one thing, but what about stopping your skins natural collagen from breaking down in the first place? Well here’s where our trusty hibiscus can lend a hand.

Hibiscus contains an antioxidant called myricetin. This antioxidant suppresses the enzyme that targets and degrades collagen, collagenase. Collagenase naturally increases as we get older, this is what causes the skin to lose its firmness therefore increasing wrinkles and drooping. The Myricetins in Hibiscus help to pump the breaks on the degeneration, helping your skin to remain strong and firm.

But we can’t forget about the other types of skin proteins, one being Elastin. Elastin is a stretchy protein that is found in the connective tissue of your skin. It helps your skin return to its original position. But like collagen, it has an arch-nemesis which will work against the elastin and break it down over time. This evil enzyme is called elastase. But just like every arch-nemesis there is a superhero to save the day and that hero is hibiscus! Well, the myricetin found in Hibiscus. Myricetin helps to slow the production of elastase, meaning less wrinkles!

3. Deep moisture boost

Hibiscus is naturally high in mucilage, the sticky substance produced by plants that help them store food and water. Mucilage is used as a natural skin moisturiser that is gentle on sensitive skin. Hibiscuses high mucilage content enhances the skins ability to retain moisture, helping retain a youthful complexion.

The naturally moisture rich hibiscus qualities that we use in our Red Ginseng and Hibiscus mask help the skin stay hydrated, soft and supple for longer. Keeping dry and dull skin at bay.

4. Antioxidants for days

Hibiscus is rich in antioxidants, called Anthocyanocides. Antioxidants are proven to help fight skin-damaging free radicals. Which spawn when pollutants such as ultraviolet radiation and traffic pollution make contact with the skin and can result in premature skin ageing. Not only do anthocyanocides protect against free radical damage, they also have slightly exacting properties. Helping to reduce the appearance of large pores for a smoother complexion. They also have an anti-inflammatory effect and can help to soothe inflamed skin, making Hibiscus suitable for those prone to very sensitive skin.

Now before you go out and start rubbing hibiscus flowers all over yourself, these stem cells and beneficial qualities are only made available through extraction. This extraction is done most times in a lab with chemists, so maybe not something that can be done in the kitchen. But luckily we have completed all the hard work for you. Our Red Ginseng and Hibiscus mask contain all of the valuable ingredients and properties to help your skin stay firm, moisturised, bright and younger looking for longer.
